Daily Distances and Destinations
CAPE TOWN > MONTAGU
187 kms / 116 miles
The journey kicks off at GS Africa’s HQ where you’ll collect your motorcycles and receive a full briefing on the tour, the route, and what to expect along the way.
After thorough inspection of your motorcycle(s) when you are geared and ready to hit the road, the route embarks straight into the lush Cape Winelands. The first stop (optional) is the charming university town of Stellenbosch, known for its classic Cape Dutch architecture (South Africa’s Dutch colonial history) — the perfect spot for a relaxing coffee break. Surrounded by the vineyards of the Cape Winelands and the mountainous nature reserves of Jonkershoek and Simonsberg the oak-shaded streets are lined with cafes, boutiques and art galleries.
The scenery transforms noticeably as you continue riding inland towards Montagu —from lush vineyards to the striking, rugged beauty of the Klein Karoo, where semi-arid landscapes and dramatic rock formations dominate the view.
Your day concludes at a stylishly designed contemporary Cape Dutch homestead, nestled at the base of the Langeberg Mountain range – only a short 3-minute stroll from the Montagu Museum and 2 km from the Montagu Mountain Reserve — the perfect place to unwind and reflect on the first leg of your journey. Bed, breakfast and a 4-course gourmet dinner at the hotel’s own restaurant on site – renowned for its wholesome cuisine, crafted from fresh, locally sourced seasonal ingredients. Many of the vegetables and herbs used in the kitchen are grown in their own vegetable garden.
MONTAGU > OUDTSHOORN
236 kms / 146 miles
Say hello to Day 2 – Heading into the heart of Route 62 — South Africa’s answer to the legendary US Route 66 when we pass the quirky and iconic Ronnie’s Sex Shop (“rumoured discounts for unwanted underwear!”) along the way!
The next stop in the charming village of Barrydale for a coffee and one of their famously indulgent gourmet milkshakes will not disappoint!
Here-after the semi-desert landscapes and the winding beauty of the Huisrivier Mountain Pass (13.4 kms) offer spectacular riding and scenic views before arriving in Oudtshoorn, the ostrich farming capital of the world.
After a relaxed lunch at a biker-friendly local restaurant, continue a short ride to your overnight serene game lodge, staying in free-standing tents against the backdrop of the majestic Swartberg Mountains, overlooking a watering hole for the animals.
You will enjoy your Bush Safari Game Drive as well as an Elephant Experience before dinner in the evening – the perfect ending to a day filled with adventure and natural beauty.
OUDTSHOORN > KNYSNA
119 kms / 75 miles
Should you wish to experience two more memorable activities after breakfast, (en-route to Knysna), visit one of South Africa’s most remarkable natural wonders and largest show cave system, The Cango Caves.
Here-after you can opt for a tractor tour at the only working ostrich farm left in Oudtshoorn, Garden Route, South Africa and meet the worlds heaviest flightless bird species – a symbol of the Little Karoo.
Leave the dry, arid terrain behind and ascend the majestic Outeniqua Mountain Pass, climbing over 800 metres before descending into the lush, vibrant landscapes of the world-renowned Garden Route.
After winding through the scenic Kaaiman’s River Pass, you’ll have a chance to stop for a photo opportunity overlooking the Indian Ocean and the white sands of Wilderness — a breathtaking first glimpse of the coast.
The peaceful lakes and forests of the Garden Route leads you to the charming town of Knysna, nestled along a tranquil estuary. Your 4/5 star graded accommodation, conveniently situated at the Knysna Waterfront and lagoon offers plentiful shopping and browsing opportunities. There are also many options to explore any of the many excellent eateries and restaurants at the Waterfront — all ideal for a relaxed evening before watching the breathtaking sunsets. Bed & breakfast.
Anchor Day in Knysna
Today is all about relaxing, unwinding, and exploring the many attractions Knysna has to offer. You can enjoy a scenic sunset boat cruise to the famous iconic Knysna Heads, a sight to behold! Separated by around 300 metres of water and the headlands of two peninsulas that enclose and form the Knysna River Estuary. Visit an impressive private motorcycle collection for browsing or participate in a History tour of Thesen Island.
More options include (but are not limited to) exploring the beautiful Knysna Forrest, known as the “footprints in Knysna”, reflections on the Lagoon: a Kayaker’s Paradise in Knysna or simply cycle through the town, a true journey of discovery. Should you wish for more time in the saddle, we are happy to suggest optional outrides in the area. Bed & breakfast.
KNYSNA > ARNISTON
363 kms / 225,5 miles
Leaving the heart of the Garden Route behind, today’s journey takes you westward toward Cape Town, passing through rolling meadowlands as you can decide whether or not you wish to ride the first off-road section of your tour. Ride through the golden wheat fields of the Overberg region and enjoy a unique river crossing over the Breede River on a newly modified pontoon (gentle gravel track for the dual purpose models).
The route continues through the farming town of Bredasdorp, home to one of only two shipwreck museums in the world! The day ends in the picturesque seaside village of Arniston — the only town in South Africa with two official names, also known as Waenhuiskrans. Bed, breakfast and Buffet Dinner at Hotel
ARNISTON > STELLENBOSCH
292 kms / 181 miles
Departing from Arniston, your first stop is Cape Agulhas, where you’ll have a photo opportunity at the monument marking Africa’s southernmost tip along its rugged coastline.
The ride continues through the fishing town of Gansbaai, renowned for its large population of great white sharks en-route to the whale-watching capital of the world — the coastal village of Hermanus.
Between July and September, Hermanus is ideal for land-based sightings of Southern Right and Humpback whales. Bed & breakfast.
STELLENBOSCH > CAPE POINT > CAPE TOWN
Total kilometers: 163 kms / 101 miles
Today is a highlight of stunning scenic landscapes, including a ride along Strandfontein Beach and a visit to the charming colony of the black-and-white, “one mate for life” bird — the iconic African penguin at Boulders Beach.
The legendary Cape of Good Hope within the Cape Point Nature Reserve (where the warm Indian Ocean and the cold Atlantic oceans meet) follows.
Then you will enjoy a breathtaking panoramic drive along Chapman’s Peak offering spectacular coastal views as you pass through the residential suburbs of Llandudno and Camps Bay, before arriving at the harbour town of Hout Bay. The latter is a perfect coffee or lunch break stop en-route to your final destination Cape Town where you will refuel for the last time before returning of your motorcycle(s) to GS Africa’s offices.
Retire to your 4* hotel at the V & A Waterfront, enjoy a memorable dinner at one of the many eateries before departing to Cape Town International Airport the following morning.
Another Option:- contemplate staying for an extra day or two to visit any of the many more sightseeing opportunities – we highly recommend any of the popular “Hop On Hop Off” Red Bus tour options.
