Ride Grade System Explained
Grade 1
Rides primarily on 99% paved roads in good condition and at reasonable altitudes. Routes may include winding coastal and mountain roads. While traffic conditions vary, driving styles in some regions may differ from what you’re accustomed to, requiring a degree of caution.
Grade 2
Mostly on paved roads in good condition, with occasional short sections on dirt surfaces, which may be loose in places. Some rides include high-altitude passes. As always, local driving styles may be different, so riders should exercise caution.
Grade 3
Primarily on paved roads, though some surfaces may be in poor condition, with potholes and heavy traffic at times. Riders may also encounter dirt sections with loose terrain and high-altitude passes. Awareness of differing driving styles is essential.
Grade 4
A mix of paved and dirt roads. Paved sections are generally good but may be narrow and potholed. Dirt sections vary from hard-packed to loose gravel, with some ruts and creek crossings. Wind can be a significant factor, making riding more demanding. Some routes also reach high altitudes. As always, local traffic norms require extra vigilance.
Grade 5
Challenging but manageable with the right support. These rides involve long days on gravel roads with occasional sandy sections, often in remote areas. While these are not races, they require a steady pace. Some off-road experience is necessary, though they remain accessible to riders with limited prior exposure. Caution is advised due to varying driving styles in different regions.
